Mondain was dead or so it seemed.
In fact, he had successfully mastered the power of immortality and soon returned to seek revenge. Having turned the Ruby of Power into a black gem of evil, he soon proved too strong for Lord British to defeat alone. Once again, he sought the aid of the Stranger a brave warrior from our world.
Once again, the Stranger battled evil at every turn chasing Mondain through time itself and eventually slaying him. Mondain's death created such a magical shock that the world of Sosaria was rent asunder each of continents becoming a world unto itself.

Ultima II - The Revenge of the Enchantress
1982
Mondain is gone, but his legacy lives on - as does his apprentice and lover, the Enchantress Minax.Twenty years after her master's death, she unleashes a wave of monsters upon Sosaria.
Seeking to prevent the Stanger's intervention, Minax travels to Earth and disrupts the fabric of time, causing the Stranger's home world to be destroyed. Unbeknownst to Minax, Lord British had returned to Earth to aid the Stranger and the two had narrowly escaped the destruction of that world.
Traveling through time once again, the Stranger gains control of the powerful Quicksword known as "Enilno". With it, he fights his way through Minax's castle - Shadowguard - and slays her. The magical aftershock released upon her death once again remakes the world of Sosaria.
1982

It is soon discovered that their dark union has brought into being an entity known as Exodus. As before, Exodus unleashes dark hordes of monsters upon Sosaria and once again Lord British summons the Stranger who appears with a trio of allies.
Together, they fight their way through numerous dungeons - their flesh seared in the process by four markings.
Weary from fighting, they travel to Ambrosia, where they meditate at shrines and collect four mysterious cards. Returning to battle, they banish the Great Earth Serpent and enter Exodus' castle. Slaying his minions, they face Exodus at last.
Using the four cards, Exodus is destroyed and the resulting aftershock remakes the world one final time.
1983

In honor of Lord British - the realm is renamed Britannia. With the threat of destruction eliminated, Lord British turns his attention to his people whose lives have become misguided and beset by disunity.
To correct this, he creates the Eight Virtues and calls for a great hero to master them and become the Avatar - the embodiment of good.
Returning to Britannia, the Stranger endeavors to master each of the Virtues, in the process meditating at shrines, braving perilous dungeons and seeking aid from seven great Companions. Together with these Companions, the Stranger braves the great Stygian Abyss, uncovers the Codex of Ultimate Wisdom and becomes the Avatar.
1985

Three terrible Shadowlords - the antithesis of goodness and virtue - emerge from the broken shards of Mondain's gem.
Capturing Lord British and imprisoning him in the Underworld, the Shadowlords then corrupt the newly crowned King Blackthorn. Blackthorn enforces the virtues with cruelty and Britannia suffers under his malevolent rule.
With Lord British imprisoned, it falls to the Companions to summon the Avatar, who joins them and journey into the Underworld to rescue Lord British. Retrieving Mondain's shards, they face the Shadowlords and destroy them. Then, having collected Lord British's crown, scepter and amulet, they survive the Dungeon Doom and set Lord British free.
Blackthorn is deposed and exiled from Britannia. Soon after, he disappears entirely

The gargoyles - a race that had long resided in the Underworld - attacks Britannia, claiming that the Codex is theirs.
Believing the Avatar to be an evil being who seeks to destroy their race, they attempt to kill him with a Moongate trap.
The Avatar is saved by the Companions and soon learns that the gargoyles are not evil, but rather misled and scared. He recognizes similarities between gargoyle philosophy and the Britannian Virtues.
Recognizing that the Codex is both a touchstone of reason and virtue and a point of great contention between the races, he uses the Vortex Cube to send it into the Void. Two mystical Lenses are then given to the kings of men and gargoyles so that they may both view the Codex in the Void and learn the truth from its wisdom.
1990

Summoned by a dream threatening the rise of a great evil, the Avatar returns to Britannia where he is mistakenly accused of kidnapping the daughter of a powerful baron. Found guilty, the Avatar is exiled to the Abyss.
He eventually uncovers a terrible plot aimed at summoning the horrific Slasher of Veils - a great and powerful daemon. Using the eight Talismans of Virtue, the Avatar is able to defeat the daemon, escape to Britannia and then return to Earth.

The Avatar is summoned from earth when a demonic face claiming to be "the Guardian" appears on his screen. The Avatar returns to Britannia, where it is soon discovered that the Fellowship is planning to open a black moongate that will allow the Guardian to enter and conquer Britannia.
With the help of the powerful Time Lord, the Avatar is able to destroy the Guardian's means of controlling the world. On the Isle of the Avatar, he confronts and defeats the Fellowship's followers. In the chaos of battle, however, their leader Batlin escapes.

Lord British has declared a time of celebration to mark the reconstruction following the moongate plot. Suddenly, the Guardian appears, trapping Castle Britannia and all those inside within the Blackrock Dome.
The Avatar descends into the sewers beneath the castle and discovers a mysterious jewel capable of allowing travel to other worlds that have previous been conquered by the Guardian. The Avatar weakens the jewel and seeks a means of destroying the Dome.
Just as the Guardian and his champion Mors Gotha begin the invasion of another world, the Avatar solves the mystery of the jewel and the Dome. Slaying Mors Gotha, the Avatar is able to shatter the Dome - freeing the Britannians and closing the gateway between worlds.
1992

Their journey takes them to the Serpent Isle, a land occupied by people who reject Lord British's "tyrannical" Virtues. Batlin is found, but is destroyed by the Guardian, whom Batlin was plotting against.
The three Banes of Chaos take control of the Companions. The forces of Chaos - having upset the balance of the cosmos - must be subdued by the Avatar. One of the possessed Companions - the brave Dupre - sacrifices himself to restore Balance and save Britannia.
With balance restored, the Guardian abducts the Avatar and the two disappear to an unknown world...
1993

It is revealed that the Guardian is actually the dark mirror of the Avatar's Virtuous self. The only way Britannia can be saved is for the Avatar to ascend to a higher plane of existence while taking the Guardian with him.
Realizing that the Runes of Virtue must be restored at all cost, the Avatar casts the powerful Armageddon spell on himself and the Guardian, merging the two and sending them out of Britannia and onto a higher plane.
In doing so, the Avatar saves Britannia for a final time.
